November has been a tough month for California. First the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks and then the fires in Malibu and Paradise. Fire hit very close to home over President's weekend with the fire at Sierra House Elementary and we are so grateful to our local firefighters, district staff and community helpers for quickly stopping the fire from spreading and for working so hard and so quickly to get the school open again.
The Tahoe Brewfest received the Tahoe Chamber's Honorable Mention in the 'Tourism' category at the annual Blue Ribbon Awards on Thursday 8th November. The Club was very proud to come second place, beating some of the South Shore's top businesses and events, and showing just how far the Brewfest has come in only two years. Nicole Marsel, our Events and Fundraising Director, did an incredible job growing and improving the event this year and we are already planning for the 1st June 2019 - save the date!
In the 2017/2018 school year, 269 children in our community qualified as homeless under the McKinney-Vento guidelines. This is not to say that they are sleeping on the streets, but that they are in a motel, living with an extended relative, or sharing one home for multiple families. On a cold but beautiful day, the 25th Annual Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Golf Classic took place at Edgewood Tahoe. For 25 years Edgewood has been playing host to our charity tournament. In addition to the course, Edgewood provides the carts, food, and beverages 100% free of charge to the Club, at an estimated value of $25,000 each year. Add to the money that we have raised from the event, this equals an estimated $1.5 million in assistance to the Club over the quarter century.
