It is true that idle hands or minds can lead to trouble, but even more importantly, idle minds can result in a decrease in educational attainment.
Studies have indicated that a child that does no academics over the summer will take until Halloween to be back at their pre-summer level. Here at the Club we do an hour of ‘Brain Gain’ every day of the summer. Simple, fun but educational activities that focus on reading and math. Doing Brain Gain ensures that our members retain all their learning from the prior school year and start the new year ready for the next level.
And you don’t just have to rely on the Club for summer learning. Tahoe offers lots of really fun and educational activities in the summer; here is a list of some examples:
The Library – throughout the summer the library will be holding special events just for kids. Magicians, science experiments, art, music – they have it all. Plus a summer reading challenge that uses gentle competition and rewards to get your kid reading lots of books over the summer. Follow them on Facebook or pop into the library to get all their summer information.
The Tahoe Institute of Natural Sciences hosts a number of nature camps over the summer. Different camps cover different topics and different ages groups. But all are fun and highly educational. Scholarships are available. Visit http://www.tinsweb.org/education-outreach/nature-camps for full information.
Forest Service – throughout the summer the Forest Service and the State Parks have a variety of different educational programs at sites around the Lake. Taylor Creek is a popular venue for nature walks and special events, while the Pope Estate has historical tours. Check each location for what they will be offering this summer.
Will’s Kids – this will be the third years that the Shakespeare on the Lake Festival will be bringing their ‘Young Shakespeare’ production to the South Shore. This year’s production is Macbeth and the FREE performance will be at 12 noon on Friday 3rd August at Valhalla.
Valhalla itself has lots of great events over the summer as part of it’s annual festival. Live music, kids camps and theater. Visit https://valhallatahoe.com/events/2018-07/ for more information.
LTCC has a full range of camps and events this summer. From recreational activities and sports, to Spanish and art programs. BGCLT members are eligible for scholarships to the STEM Camps being held in collaboration with our Club Mom Dr Jamie Orr. Please contact Jude on 530 542 0838 for more information on the BGCLT scholarships.
So get out there and have some educational fun in the sun this summer!
