“Playgrounds are the foundation for classrooms… Kids spread their wings, take leaps, and learn to play.”
– Luke Borchers, Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Health and Wellness Coordinator
THE CURRENT PLAYGROUND
- The current Al Tahoe playground is over 25 years old. The playground was built in the late 1990s for Al Tahoe Elementary School and the community surrounding it.
- Since the elementary school closed in 2004, there have been no upgrades or improvements to the playground, resulting in many areas now being boarded up, decrepit, and unsuitable for many age groups.
- Accessibility, safety, and versatility are the main focuses for the Community Playground Campaign. With new youth programs, schools, and community sports using the spaces around the playground, we need a playground that is fun and accessible for all ages, all abilities, and all children.
- The new playground will be used by over 2,000 youth and teens a year, and will serve as a focal point for the Al Tahoe neighborhood and surrounding programs.
THE VISION
Develop a playground that will build off the sense of pride that the new Boys and Girls Club facility has created for the kids and surrounding community. The playground will provide socializing and play spaces for all ages groups, as well as interpretive spaces and learning opportunities.

IDEA GENERATION
Design Workshop, an international design studio, visited our Angel of Tahoe building for their volunteer day on January 13, 2023. Our Club members and staff came together to brainstorm how we could make a safer, more fun, and inclusive playground for our Club and the community. Based on the ideas that were discussed, Design Workshop outlined a series of sketches to represent our vision.
“Research shows outdoor play involving some level of physical activity has a positive impact on a child’s mental health because it increases natural endorphins, fosters higher self-esteem, and contributes to well-rounded social relationships.”
– Dr. Tracy Protell, Barton Psychiatry
